VMFAT-101 and VMAT-102 were USMC replacement training squadrons for the Phantom II and Skyhawk. The Harrier unit, VMA-513, was not a replacement training unit (that organization was at Cherry Point), but was located at Yuma to help support the grunt training at Pendleton. Picacho Mountain is located just out of MCAS Yuma and is frequently used as the background for photo hops.
There have been many changes at MCAS Yuma since this photo was taken. The training group (MAG-10) has disbanded as well as VMAT-102, VMFAT-101 was moved to El Toro and then to MCAS Miramar. They are now an F/A-18 Hornet training squadron for both the USN and the USMC. MAG-13, which was an A-4 group has moved into Yuma from El Toro and changed to AV-8B aircraft.
