This photograph was taken by our Public Affairs Officer from the top of the squadron building in 1990 or 1991. The "human VC-8" consisted of the officers and the enlisted men and women of Fleet Composite Squadron Eight. The TA-4J in the photo is aircraft 00 before it was painted with the aggressor scheme and then designated 100. The helicopters are SH-3G Sea Kings. Their primary function was search and rescue until the squadron transitioned to UH-3H in 1992. Additionally, when I first arrived at VC-8 in June of 1989 they had one TA-4F model that supposedly a pilot pulled the ejection handles on. The armed seats were removed from the aircraft and it became the hangar queen. I believe that this aircraft was the original 106, or 06 at that time, that would explain why the retired 106 had an 8 thousand series BUNO number instead of a 3 or 4 thousand series number like the rest. Also, there was a TA-4J that failed an AIRLANT inspection due to a twisted main spar and then became the static display aircraft that sat at the front gate of Naval Station Roosevelt Roads until its closing. If my memory serves me correctly it was originally aircraft 02 and was repainted as aircraft 00 by AMS1 Robin Davis, AMS3 Kelly Rawlings, and myself.
