The Road Runners had flown to Naval Air Station Atsugi, Japan, while their carrier, United States Ship Kitty Hawk, was ported at Yokosuka, Japan. When Kitty Hawk departed April 8, 1968, for the Tonkin Gulf, the VA-144 Skyhawks flew out and trapped aboard enroute to Yankee Station.
