Bob Miecznikowski, former Skyhawk Driver, collects Skyhawk Memorabilia. One of his
cherished items is described below. First Flight envelope date stamped: Edwards Air Force Base June 22, 1954. On the envelope is the Douglas logo with El Segundo Division, El Segundo, California address on it and a red box that has: FIRST FLIGHT Douglas A4D "Skyhawk" Navy's "Mighty Midget" Atom Bomber Edwards Air Force Base Muroc, California It was addressed to: Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Fowler 303 Garfield Avenue Ashland, Oregon The letter inside reads: June 1954 Dear Friends: This souvenir catchet was carried aboard the Navy's A4D Skyhawk on its successful madin flight today at Edwards Air Force Base, Muroc,California. The Skyhawk was first announced publicly June 7th as the "Mighty Midget" bomber; Smallest and lightest jet combat airplane in the United States. Though the attack bomber is half the size of many current operational jet fighters, it has higher performance than many jet fighters. It has been designed without folding wings and will operate from all sizes of Navy Carriers. The bantam bomber carries a powerful bombload and has combat radius greater than many propeller-driven attack airplanes. Advance design of the Skyhawk is based on the philosophy that by better engineering, airplanes can be built smaller and more efficient, as well as at considerably less cost and in shorter time.
